Just finished ds1 zweihänder run and it was so good, i want to do the same in ds3. Never used anything than dex in ds3, so i have no clue about heavy weapons. Important is the massive damage, (at best) early game acess and "cool" faktor when Using (zweihänder is just fun and satisfyieng) ... The most close to the DS1 Zweihander is DS3 ...The Claymore is also a large and powerful weapon overall, although it is noticibly more nimble than the Zweihander. You can use it in a similar way to the zwei but you aren't all-in on a STR build style strategy. It sits between the zwie and a straightsword in plsystyle. The one handed moveset is more useful than the zwie's, especially the thrusts. Balder Side Sword is pretty much the king of longswords. Battle-Axe is probably the best low stat smacker. Rapier can drill a single opponent really fast. Zweihander is a good light weight ultra greatsword. Depends on what you're looking to get out of it. If you want max power with minimal stat investment, ascend down the Chaos path with 16 Strength and 10 dex (always 2 handed). If you prefer raw physical damage, it scales more then double via strength compared to dex so 40/27 would be solid.
