It's either max khans guard, or combo of fians and legionary for me. The khans are best at open field, but a well placed slope defense with the foot army can just wipe the floor with anyone. It's more finicky, but it's also better for sieges as khans guards don't carry shields.
Imperial Cataphracts are probably the best overall. To go up against 100~300 strong regular armies. All horse archer all the way works ok, but would it be better to have a few geared as heavy infantry? All heavy twohanded footmen? They aren't invincible, but still stronger than any other soldier.
What does that army composition look like, for example khuzaits are something like 50% melee Calvary, and 50% horse archers. And 2. They've got the largest shields of any heavy infantry, some of the strongest armor, and are brutal in close combat - plus they always seem to hit more often with their javelins than legionaries do.Fians are best, but any will do.
